Drake Smith

Trombonist
Young jazz trombonist Drake
Smith Jr. is causing quite a sensation. Just
turning 19, Drake Jr. has played with jazz
trombone legends Eddie Bert, Steve Davis and
Bill Watrous. He has also played with Jan
& Dean and the Surf City All-Stars, 60's
folk rock duo Chad and Jeremy and The Nelson
Riddle Orchestra. He had his recording debut
at age 15 on Al Thompson's album "City
Mainstream" released on the Alcalgar
label. True to form Drake recorded his solo
in a single take leaving those in attendance
relatively speechless and very pleased.
Marshall
McDonald lead alto saxophonist for the Count Basie Orchestra said "Drake
Smith Jr. has a maturity and thoughtfulness of playing well beyond his years.
Keep an eye on this young lion. This kid is the future of jazz."
Drake
is a now sophomore at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern
California. As a member of the prestigious Thornton Jazz Orchestra under the direction
of Bob Mintzer, he has played with guest artists including Peter Erskine, Vince
Mendoza, and Ed Neumeister. Drake was awarded a full four-year academic scholarship
and studies jazz trombone with the legendary Bill Watrous.
